THE AMATEUR JOCKEYS ASSOCIATION OF GREAT BRITAIN

Year: 2011

Amateur All Weather Championship decided today at Wolves!

21-02-2011

The first two races on the card today at Wolverhampton are the final two amateur races of the all weather season and the battle for the championship will be concluded.

With multiple champion Simon Walker currently in runner-up slot but riding abroad in Saudi, this leaves the championship secured by Chris Martin unless Becky Brisbourne managed to ride a double today!

Good luck to all our riders at Wolves!

Jonathon Bewley wins on return from injury

15-02-2011

Congratulations to JONATHON BEWLEY on a great ride today to score on Teerie Express at Newcastle over fences on his second ride back from a long lay off after injuring his shoulder last September at Perth.  Prominent early on, Teerie Express made good headway to challenge favourite Jeringa and was only a length down and staying on well when a mistake at the last looked as if he would be denied victory, only to make a great recovery and stay on again to take up the lead just before the line!

Chris Martin leaps into lead in All-Weather Championship

08-02-2011

Congratulations to BRENDAN POWELL on riding his first winner under rules in the first division of Southwell’s All-Weather for his father Brendan senior today.  The trainer said: “He’s had a couple of hundred rides flapping in Ireland and this is all he’s ever wanted to do.”

The second division was a repeat of last year’s race with Jackie Kiely enjoying visiting his favourite track, beating Bright Sparky to score for the 10th time at Southwell!  This win was significant for jockey CHRIS MARTIN, giving him 5 points to leap ahead of current leader SIMON WALKER in the Amateur All-Weather Championship with only two days All-Weather racing of the amateur season remaining (12th and 21st February, both at Wolverhampton).  The current table is as follows:

All amateur jockeys will have a received a letter with their riding permit confirming the number of wins recorded at the BHA and asking you to contact Licensing if your records are incorrect.  Licensing can be contacted via the BHA switchboard on 0207 152 0000.

TRAGIC NEWS FROM IRELAND

07-02-2011

A reminder of the dangers of our sport were brought home to us today with tragic news from Ireland of the death of teenager Jack Tyner.

Our deepest condolences go to his family.  Jack took a terrible fall at Dungarvan point-to-point last Tuesday and has been battling for his life ever since.

Jack actually rode a winner that day on Exitnell.  Jack was taken to Cork University Hospital where he died this morning.  He was nineteen.

AJA sponsorship scheme reminder

28-01-2011

An important reminder to all amateur jockeys, and especially to point-to-point jockeys who are enjoying the newly launched PPA sponsorship scheme and are considering riding in Hunterchases, that in order to wear sponsors’ logos under Rules it is necessary to register a separate sponsorship agreement with Weatherbys.

All contracts sent to Weatherbys must be accompanied by a cheque made payable to the AJA for £250 or the contract will not be registered.

If you have any queries or need assistance with amateur jockeys’ sponsorship, please call John Bevis on 01933 440077 or e-mail jbevis@weatherbys.co.uk.

Many thanks and good luck this season!

Folkestone adds flat ladies race

22-01-2011

Many thanks to Folkestone Racecourse for adding a ladies flat race to feature on their Ladies Day on 6th June.  Management also hope to add a men’s race later in the season.  Watch this space.

Fegentri new season gets underway

20-01-2011

Last weekend saw the start of the Fegentri season for the ladies with RACHEL KING representing Great Britain in Siracuse.  Rachel is based in Wiltshire and has ridden winners under all codes.  She finished 5th on Sunday and now looks forward to Qatar in February.  Rachel’s biggest flat winner to date is the Queen Mother’s Cup at York which she won for Pat Eddery in 2010.

Qatar are very generously including gentlemen riders in their invitation for racing in February and our gentleman representative for 2011 will be NICO DE BOINVILLE. Nico is attached to Nicky Henderson’s yard and recently played a starring role alongside AP McCoy promoting Austin Reed at Newbury Racecourse!

Congratulations Sam Waley-Cohen!

15-01-2011

Many congratulations to Sam Waley-Cohen on his great success today at Kempton when Long Run gave him such a thrilling winning ride in the King George, thus denying Kauto Star a historic fifth victory.

This is a huge win for an amateur being a Grade One race and the last time such a prestigious race was won by an amateur jockey was over 20 years ago when Marcus Armytage won the Grand National for Kim Bailey with Mr Frisk in 1990.   To find a race with level weights, you have to go back even further to when Jim Wilson  won the Gold Cup at Cheltenham on Little Owl back in 1981!

The ecstatic jockey said “That was amazing.  He got into a rhythm and picked up – he showed real courage.  He’s a phenomenal horse and I’m so pleased he’s shown what he’s capable of.  It’s a massive honour to be here and I want to thank Dad, Nicky and all the guys at Seven Barrows.”

This is the biggest staying chase win of Nicky Henderson’s training career to date.
