Ruth maintains Fegentri lead with penultimate race in Holland

12-09-2010

Ruth Jefferson is in Holland today for the penultimate ladies race in this year’s Fegentri series where the first four girls in the Fegentri league tables have just finished in the last four!

Consequently there will be no firm result to this year’s Ladies World Championship until the final race in Mauritius in December.  Whatever the outcome, Ruth has done us all proud this year.

Interestingly, although the Fegentri Gentlemen’s World Championship has been won by Great Britain in the past, most recently by David Dunsdon in 2002, none of our lady riders have ever won this championship, although we have enjoyed runner-up position for the last two years respectively with Gemma Gracey-Davison and Claire Allen both making valiant efforts.

Harry Challoner has also enjoyed a good Fegentri season representing Great Britain, currently lying 3rd in the rankings, and travels to Bremmen next weekend.

BOLLINGER SERIES 2010

11-09-2010

What a week with no less than 3 Bollinger races for amateur gentlemen riders!  With Aragall playing up in the stalls and having to be withdrawn, Miles Seston could only watch his grip on the series slip away as the remaining field of 8 enjoyed Goodwood on Tuesday.  Many congratulations to Jake Hodson winning on Switched On for Ian Williams and enjoying his first ever winning ride under Rules.

Entries and decs were so plentiful for Friday’s Chester meeting that the race was divided, giving us a welcome extra race for this years series to now total 9 races.

Another of our members, 16 year old Rob Williams, enjoyed his first ever winning ride under Rules in Chester’s second division on Mr Udagawa who is owned and trained by his grandfather Bernard Llewellyn.  Congratulations to Rob!

The first division was won smoothly by 4-times series winner Simon Walker on tail swishing Clumber Park for trainer Richard Guest and the Clumber Park Syndicate.  Simon’s second place in the second division on Dazeen earned him enough points to take him into the lead for this year’s finale which takes place at Ascot’s Autumn Festival meeting on Friday next 24th September.  Miles Seston remains the only threat to Simon to take this year’s Bollinger Championship.

Phil Collington wins Epsom Amateur Derby

30-08-2010

Fifteen runners and riders lined up at Epsom this afternoon for the Tompkins and May Amateur Derby in only its second year of running as a true amateur Derby open to all amateur gentlemen riders which provided a vintage race.

Many congratulations to Phil Collington and Lucinda Featherstone on their great victory with Maybe I Wont.  Phil, along with the other eventual placed horses, played a waiting game and tracked the front runners until turning for home.

Pictured (top) rounding Tattenham Corner, Phil (on the outside in maroon and white) bides his time to come with a run and storm clear in the last few strides to win, giving trainer Lucinda Featherstone a memorable 1-2 with stablemate Arashi 2nd ridden by her son Jonathon, and King’s Masque and Robert Williams in 3rd.

Unstoppable Serena can’t stop winning!

18-08-2010

Serena Brotherton has beaten her own record number of winners in a season with an incredible strike rate this year, scoring this evening at Carlisle with her 7th winner of the campaign.

Having won the lady amateur flat championship in 2005 (5 winners) and 2006 (6 winners), Serena had to wait until last year before reclaiming her title (5 winners).  This year she now leads the tables 4 clear of her nearest rival Louise Allan, whilst much remains of the season to look forward to with Epsom for starters hosting the Ladies Derby tomorrow night.  Good luck to Serena and to all the ladies!

It was also good to see seasoned campaigner Simon Walker back in the winner’s enclosure in the first division of Carlisle’s amateur race tonight.  This was only Simon’s second winner this season which has been unusually quiet for him but no doubt he has plenty in store for us before the season is finished.

3 AMATEUR DERBIES LOOMING!!!

16-08-2010

Not only do we have our own Epsom Amateur Derby for ladies on 19th August and for gentlemen on 30th August but Ireland are now hosting their own Amateur Derby on 11th September at The Curragh.

The Curragh Racecourse is set to stage the first Amateur Riders Derby as part of the Autumn Festival of Racing on Saturday 11th September.  The race over 14 furlongs will have a total prize fund of €56,000 and will be open to all qualified riders.  The race is an exciting addition to an established international star studded program featuring The Irish Field St Leger and Group 1 National Stakes

Paul Hensey, Racecourse General Manager commented “We are delighted to support this initiative which will be the fourth Derby to take place at the Curragh this year and we will work closely with the Qualified Riders Association to ensure we maximise all potential to attract the most competitive field of runners possible”. He added “We plan to make the race a permanent feature of the weekend which combines exceptional racing with great fashion, food and fun over two days.”

“We are very grateful to the Curragh for agreeing to stage the first Amateur Riders Derby, which will raise the profile of our association and give riders a huge trill to be able to take part in a race on such a prestigious day” said Ross O’Sullivan, Chairman of the Qualified Riders Association.  The County Kildare venue already stages the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby, Derrinstown Stud Apprentice Derby and Thalgo Ladies Derby.

Clare Wills shines at Newton Abbot

10-08-2010

Congratulations to Clare Wills who rode a fine race to score on Massina Man against professionals in the 2 and a 1/2 mile novice chase at Newton Abbot today.  In spite of the horse making a terrible mistake at the 12th fence, Clare kept  him motivated to go on and win by a neck!

Clare has been assistant to trainer Brendan Powell since the day she left school – the same day that Brendan started training – and deserves every success for all of the hard work she puts in.

Ruth Jefferson leaps ahead for Fegentri

08-08-2010

Second this afternoon at The Curragh in the ladies Fegentri race, Ruth had non-nominated Fegentri riders both in front and behind her in 1st and 3rd places (Nina Carberry winning the race) and therefore her 12 points scored for the Fegentri series increases her world championship lead in the tables.  Many congratulations to Ruth on a great ride on an outsider this afternoon.
